Of course, in the process, I effectively plugged the "vent" for the tank - LOL! So does anyone know of a venting fuel cap (like the old pre-emissions caps) that fit on an 87 Monte Carlo? thank you, angela | #701034 - 07/07/09 12:13 AM Re: Need a Venting Gas Cap for an 87 Monte Carlo [Re: Dad's SS] | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 5,638 mmc427ss 20+ Year | 20+ Year Member Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 5,638 Pottstown, Pa | Just did a search the other day at the parts store, looked through the Stant catalogue and came up with no vented cap with the same thread as the non-vented cap. Let me know if you find on. The gas cap is an emissions device and law probably mandates that no cap manufacture can make a vented to replace a non vented for an emissions car. Put a liquid check valve in-line then a breather. I took the stock cap off and there is a minor venting feature built into the cap. I cleaned the cap and was pretty surprised at how much dirt came out of the internal spring mechanism. It's conceivable that it just wasn't functioning. I'm going to get a stock replacement cap and then "play" with the stock cap a little bit. What I would like is the stock cap to retain the liquid surge feature but still allow air movement. If I screw it up, I will already have a new replacement - LOL! I'll let you guys know if I was successful. If I fail miserably I'll just unplug the vent line, put in a check valve and filter with my fresh replacement gas cap. If I can get the stock cap to open up and vent a little better but still keep the liquid protection, I'll take pictures and post. angela Last edited by Dad's SS; 07/07/09 01:09 PM. | #701151 - 07/07/09 02:09 PM Re: Need a Venting Gas Cap for an 87 Monte Carlo [Re: Dad's SS] | Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 2,047 06mcss Member | Member Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 2,047 Killeen, TX | dixiemontecarlo.com has them. There was not a way to vent the gas cap that was both safe and prevented "gas smell". So I went to a u-pick wrecking yard and found a charcoal canister from a Geo. It's an itty-bitty thing. Using the Monte's existing vent line, I ran a soft line to extend to the Geo canister and hid the canister in the space behind the headlamps. Very small, very tidy and the whole thing is hidden. No gas smell and proper venting. Took the big girl on a 350 mile trip - worked flawlessly. $5 fix. angela Last edited by Dad's SS; 08/05/09 03:05 PM. | #710767 - 08/05/09 05:22 PM Re: Need a Venting Gas Cap for an 87 Monte Carlo [Re: Dad's SS] | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 4,694 84supersport Member | Member Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 4,694 Louisville, KY | You got any pictures? I just left the carb end off mine and dont get a smell but I would like to eliminate it or hide it atleast. I bought a cap once that allowed filling without even removing the cap but I guess becauce of the angle of the fill tube it wouldnt work properly. 84 Monte SS stolen September 2012. 077 DFE Jefferson County KY plate. $2500 reward. It's about 6 inches tall, four inches wide and around 2.75 to 3 inches across. There are three lines going into it for emissions. Tank, purge, and carburetor bowl. There is a drain line out the bottom as well. I'm hooked into the tank line. I may later connect the purge line. The purge line goes to the ported side of the carburetor (on an edelbrock, that's the passenger side front port). It would allow the canister to "burp" the vapors off. Doesn't seen to be needed so I just have a cap on it. I put the canister in the big void behind the headlamp assembly. I'm going to cover the hole from the top with a piece of sheet metal just to finish up the front of the engine bay. Once that is in, you won't see the canister at all. Guess until that piece of metal is fitted, I should get rid of the fugly bright yellow cap - LOL! angela | #711580 - 08/08/09 01:27 AM Re: Need a Venting Gas Cap for an 87 Monte Carlo [Re: Dad's SS] | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 4,694 84supersport Member | Member Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 4,694 Louisville, KY | How does it mount? I'm sure any compact would have one that small but i'm just curious incase thats the only one I can find if I go get one of those. 84 Monte SS stolen September 2012. 077 DFE Jefferson County KY plate. $2500 reward. The canister had a metal threaded insert on one side for the bolt. You can see it - it's the part that sticks out between the back of the canister and the core support. It would be very easy to build a bracket or to adapt the whole GEO bracket. I didn't grab the GEO bracket because I originally intended to hide this inside of the fender between the inner and outer structure. It didn't quite fit. Close, but not quite. There were quite a few others that would have worked as well. Look in Honda's, Geos, etc., the newer the better. angela Last edited by Dad's SS; 08/08/09 01:45 AM. | Moderated by 345HP87SSAC, 85_SS, Dalt10, Gruvin, mannblk, MC87SS, mcss383, MY FYN 79, Phil87SS, Russ, ss4ever, TPI Monte SS | Recent Contributors kevins88ss | | |
